Have fun with the poem by trying this...

This is a sad poem about creatures that once lived on earth but are now extinct. Use your research skills to look up 2 or 3 of these creatures and see what they once looked like and where they lived. Read the poem out loud and think about how you can change your voice for the line ‘Three, two, going….going….gone’. You can look up ‘endangered species’ that are at risk today. Pick some that interest you and use Mandy Coe’s poem to help you write a verse that might help people save these creatures.

We live in books and photographs,
our stories all begin with ‘Once’,
three, two, going, going…gone.

Barbary Lion, Atitlan Grebe,
Caribbean Monk Seal, Carolina Parakeet.

We tasted good, our forests were yours
Our horn was valuable, you wore our furs,
three, two, going, going…gone.

Laughing Owl, Passenger Pigeon,
Javan Tiger, Japanese Sea Lion.

We flew and swam beneath the sun,
nested, hunted, raised our young,
three, two, going, going…gone.

Western Black Rhinoceros, Aldabra Snail,
Pyrenean Ibex, Wake Island Rail

Shells, tails, whiskers and bone,
three, two, going, going…

Extinct
